The world has made great strides in improving resource efficiency through technology, resulting in an economy dominated by traditional consumption patterns. There is no doubt that this “linear” economy is testing the planetary limits and threatens business at the same time. There is a need for change as our planet is required to provide the resources needed to facilitate a dignified existence for 9 billion people in 2050. Therefore, the current ‘take, make, dispose’ production model should shift to a ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ mentality. The latter is referred to as a Circular Economy that is aimed at optimizing resource efficiency, in which “waste” is high-grade recycled or recovered for new user- or production- cycles.
At KPMG Sustainability there are approximately 40 consultants working on a daily basis on sustainability issues with our clients. One of our key propositions is to advise and support businesses and governments on circular opportunities and business models.
