VDL ETG Technology & Development is the development organization responsible for developing high-tech mechatronic (sub)systems. For interoperability of machine modules with supervisory machine control, OPC-UA as defined by the OPC Foundation is a promising initiative. Internship information
The internship project objectives are:
For VDL ETG T&D, knowledge on the connectivity of modules for machine control is a competence area that needs further development. VDL ETG T&D has developed a reference architecture which is currently realized in a prototype. The assignment has the following aspects:

• OPC-UA Fitness for use
• Use of OPC-UA in a heterogenous system

The following tasks are part of the assignment:

• Study the technology and assess fitness for the prototyping project as executed by VDL ETG.
• On a technical level exploration should be done into various aspects of OPC UA: amongst others services provided, method invocation, synchronous and synchronous client and server aspect.
• Relations to (Embedded) Operating Systems and platform: Windows family (f.e. WES/WEC), Linux, RTOS on microcontrollers.
• Market investigation for SDK providers taking aspects for possible selection into account such as pricing and support levels.
• Language binding aspects.
• Demonstration of the technology on top of the reference architecture and connection to real motion control axes.
• Compare other standards such as SEMI: SECS-II, SECS/GEM.
• Compare OPC XML-RPC standard.
• Connect OPC-UA to proprietary standard such as ASML OO remoting framework.

• Current study: Computer Science and Engineering / Embedded Systems / Systems and Control / Informatica
