HBO/WO Internship: Help DAF migrate the current software (and its architecture) to ROS2 in Eindhoven

At DAF trucks, all applications (besides the powertrain) are run by the VECU. This controller does all the major calculations and then controls other, smaller controllers to run the applications.Nowadays and in the future, more applications will be added to the truck. In the future, they will need a more powerful controller/computer to perform all these calculations. As the algorithms on the device are becoming very complex.
A previous internship assignment showed that ROS2 works well to create and run automotive software in the HPC, and tried to port some of the software over. However, due to time constraints, not much was realized.
This assignment also resulted in the question: What is the best way to map the current software architecture into ROS2?
This task includes:

• Investigate how ROS2 can control automotive vehicles
• Investigate how the current software can be mapped on ROS2
• Investigate how DAF can prepare itself to switch to ROS2

• Propose how such a framework could be used to improve the development and maintainability of our software.
• Alignment with different teams at DAF (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) and Kenworth (Kirkland, WA, USA)

Jouw profiel

For this assignment we are looking for a Bachelor student ICT, Computer Science or Software Engineering. You possess the following competences: cooperation, creativity, planning and organizing, problem analysis.

Embedded Engineering works closely together with PACCAR Embedded Engineering located in Renton (near Seattle), the USA.The products developed within Embedded Engineering are applied on DAF trucks but also in the famous PACCAR brands Kenworth and Peterbilt. Through component sales our products are used by leading bus and coach manufacturers.
