The first integration test level within vehicle testing is the E/E integration & test level where ECUs will be (incrementally) integrated with sensors, actuators and if possible cable harnesses. Generally these tests are carried out on an Hardware In the Loop (HIL) platform. The HIL platform having the highest level of integration used to be the Vehicle HIL. In this test rig all powertrain related ECU’s are onboard (engine, gearbox and braking system). Vehicle dynamics and the resulting sensor input and actuator output to the ECU’s are simulated in a dSpace environment. As the vehicle dynamics are only used for functional testing (for example: does the cruise control work in the desired speed range) and not visualised, there were limited requirements on the model performance.
A few years ago the Driving Simulator HIL has been introduced. The simulator is based upon the vehicle HIL added with an virtual vehicle environment. The simulation is projected on a 270 degrees screen placed around the truck cabin. The driver gets an full experience as the drivers field of view is completed covered by the projection. The cabin is not actuated and thus fixed to the ground.
In other words, the driver directly perceives the performance of the vehicle dynamics model. In general, the driving experience, especially for lateral displacement, is rated as unrealistic and unpleasant.
The goal of the graduation is to enhance the driving simulator HIL setup by improving the driving experience, such that the setup can be used for HMI/ADAS panel assessments.
Assignment
The assignment is divided in several parts:
Profile
Since 1996, DAF is part of PACCAR, a global technology leader in the design, manufacture and customer support of Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF trucks. PACCAR also provides financial services and information technology and distributes truck parts to its principal business.
The vehicle testing department within DAF, executes tests in the areas of functionality, durability and reliability. The chassis group within vehicle testing is focussed on functional testing of chassis mounted components, constructions and systems such as the steering system, brake system and vehicle lights.
