The majority of simulations performed in industry are using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model because of its robustness and its computational efficiency. The drawback is on results accuracy especially for simulations involving complex physics. It is necessary to better understand the models and the results of the simulation software used (StarCCM+) to go a step further in quantitative prediction.
The goal of this project is improve the turbulence models used at DAF CAE-engine. The candidate will start by reviewing the literature available on CFD validation. He will build models to replicate simulations from knowledge database (ERCOFTAC, NASA etc). He will improve his simulations to match as possible the reference data within reasonable computation time.
Several problems can be investigated: heat transfer between solid and fluid, rotation, compression etc.
