The CAE-engines department is responsible for creation and validation of models that can describe and predict the behavior of the new and current engines. Due to more increasing requirements on emissions modern diesel engines have become complex systems. These emssion legislations cause the need to add additional sub-systems to the base engine. To ensure all these sub-systems with wiring and lines can be accomodated on the base engine support brackets are being used. To ensure endurance life of these brackets stress levels due to mounting and engine vibrations need to be limited by optimizing their stiffness and the connections to the base engine. Within DAF the need to determine design guidelines for sheet metal brackts has risen. One of the focus points is predicting the stress levels in the sheet metal brackets that occur after mounting due to production tolerances using FEM software. Based on historical data of sheet metal bracket designs new ideas and functions need to be implemented and calculated with FEM software. Finally a document containing design guidelines should be written to ensure that all new/updated brackets will be insensitve for production tolerances. The assignment will be mainly theoretical using Abaqus CAE as FEM software. |
