Internship: Msc internship Thermal Processes Hot Strip Mill in IJmuiden

Beschrijving

What's your job?

The production of steel strip products from slabs, for example for the automotive or construction sector, mainly consists of several thickness reduction steps in rolling mills. During hot rolling, 230-mm thick slabs of 1200°C are rolled via several steps into 3-mm strip with a temperature of about 500°C. The control of product temperatures during this process is vital to achieve the desired product geometry, surface and mechanical properties. Knowledge of heat transfer is therefore integrated in online control models to achieve this excellent temperature control. New products, the aspiration to use less energy, and the objective to produce more tonnes of steel with the same installations requires to continuously improve the accuracy and capability of our hot rolling processes and its control concepts.

Your challenge is to improve the temperature control in one of our hot strip mills. A thorough study of the heating and cooling processes during hot rolling is essential for your success, as well as a good overview of potential control concepts. Ultimately, you come up with new inventions to improve strip temperature control, with less energy consumption, which enables Tata Steel to produce new or more products with the same rolling mill.

Is this you?

You are a MSc student in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Technology, Applied Physics, Metallurgy or a comparable field. You are looking for an internship or graduation assignment in an industrial R&D environment. You have a special interest in transport phenomena (heat and mass transfer), thermodynamics, dynamic modelling, metallurgy and control engineering.

Because of the Dutch work permit rules you need to be enrolled in a Dutch University, or you need to be a EU citizen.

What do we offer?

Our traineeships offer opportunities for students to acquire skills and experience in the field of industrial research. During the traineeship, you contribute to the development of thermal processes involved in rolling of steel strip products. You analyse and improve (the control of) heat transfer during heating of steel products or semi-products. You work in a running R&D project together with Tata Steel colleagues, both from R&D and manufacturing plants. We encourage trainees to regularly visit Tata Steel production plants to gain even more experiences. You will be paid during your internship.

What's your department?

The Rolling, Finishing & Measurement (RFM) department is part of Tata Steel Research & Development and is based in IJmuiden, the Netherlands. RFM initiates industrial innovations for the processing of steel strip products by optimising existing -and developing new- technologies. The Thermal Processes group is one of the five groups in this department. It develops new technologies related to thermal processes involved in the production of steel strip, such as heating in furnaces and cooling by means of water or air and includes the surface reactions (oxidation-reduction) occurring during these thermal processes.
