Trigger for project
To remain profitable and competitive it is necessary for DAF to produce their trucks in the most efficient way possible. The key performance indicator (KPI), used to measure the level of efficiency within production is the Departmental Efficiency (DE) indicator. It is a ratio between the amount of time spend on producing trucks, compared to the theoretical time to produce these trucks. This indicator is determined per plant, per area, per department and per team and is reported weekly up to PACCAR’s board-level.

At DAF Eindhoven, the DE-indicator is determined via an outdated, custom-made application. The knowledge about how the DE-indicator is calculated as well as the knowledge to support the system in which this is done, is limited. On the other side, the outcome of the current DE-indicator calculation is accepted as the truth for years. Furthermore, the calculation of the DE-indicator differs between Eindhoven and Westerlo Plants, which should not be the case.

Goal project
Problem statement

The process to calculate the DE-indicator is unclear and differs per plant, which makes it difficult to ensure a correct output and challenging to rebuild the DE-indicator calculation into a new application, away from the current legacy systems.

Research question
What is the optimal model/approach to calculate the level of efficiency for the production of trucks at all DAF plants in order to provide equal information to the business as currently done, in a well-managed, uniform and efficient way?

Deliverables project
Part 1: Scoping & Analysis
  • A functional and technical description regarding the current determination of the DE-indicator as implemented by DAF Eindhoven and DAF Westerlo.
  • An analysis based on literature and best practices to determine what is the best way to calculate the Departmental Efficiency at DAF.

Part 2: Design
  • A proposal for the development of a new model to calculate the DE-indicator at DAF.

Part 3: Evaluation
  • An evaluation of the proposed model at DAF.
  • An evaluation of the proposed model for the automotive industry in general.
