Tribology is the science and engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It includes the study and application of the principles of friction, lubrication and wear. Tribology is highly interdisciplinary. It draws on many academic fields, including physics, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, biology and engineering.
In total, ~23% of the world’s energy consumption originates from tribological contacts. Of that, 20% is to overcome friction and 3% to remanufacture worn parts and spare equipment due to wear and wear-related.
For DAF engine, well designed and maintained tribological interfaces means high standard fuel economy and high reliability (wear related) of the system for customers.
During this internship you are working on the following topics:
- Perform benchmarking activities and learn from competitors' solutions
- Translate end customer (truck driver & buyer) value (fuel economy, reliability, etc) into fundamental (tribology, material, mechanics, manufacturing process) design features
- Understand and provide feedback on DAF technical requirement such as PDB, FRS, FDS, TRS, ETS
- Identify cost reduction and performance improvement opportunities
Specific component and technical tasks will be selected based on the specific technical background of the student and the dynamically changing priorities of running project contents, to be further defined in September when this internship starts.
For this assignment we are searching for a driven and enthusiastic Master student Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, Material Science or Industrial Engineering. You are fluent in the English language, both verbal and written form.
Starting in July and available for 4-6 months.
Within the PACCAR Inc. DAF engine development is the centre of competence for engine development. In our state-of-art engine development centre we develop engine families for the future regulations. Our engines and trucks are best in class products in the transportation world being always driven by providing environmentally friendly products with best cost-effectiveness and highest reliability for our customers.
The department Engine Hardware & Design is responsible for the development of new hardware engine concepts and maintaining the in-production engine families. The department is split in 5 groups; CAE, Injection & Turbo, Base engine, Engine Auxiliaries & EAS HW.
